Interesting announcement from David Recordon of Six Apart about social graph…First off congrats to David on joining 6A. I am sure he will be a great addition to the team.

We think that the best way for you to manage your network is to stop thinking about all of the little pieces and to start focusing on the big picture: you and the people who matter to you. We think relationships mean more than email addresses or which service you’re signed on to at the moment. So we’ve created an experimental demo based upon open technologies OpenID, the Microformats hCard and XFN, and FOAF that allow you to see your entire network of relationships in one place - across services, across platforms, across the entire Web.

There are some interesting ideas and technologies that Six Apart is talking about here.  Check out the screen casts with the original post for more details on how 6A is planning to use these different technology to create a declarative, open social graph for all people. Most of these technologies (including OpenID which readers know we love - see our reviews here, here and here)  require users to be tech-savvy. And, I think, as a result it will take a little bit more time…Let’s see how these things develop.

Another aspect of the user identity and privacy that needs to be addressed is the community specific identity of users. These community specific identities are not really owned by the users (kinda like you don’t really own your reputation - its  really about what other people think of you). These community identities can help incentivize participation and  help the conversation in online communities. I believe these social tools can really help improve the conversation and could also be a focus for 6A.

Reward your commenters

August 23rd, 2007

This is great…Check out the initiative at Huffington Post to engage their community:

But we’re most excited to announce a new initiative where we will choose one commenter a month to become a featured blogger at HuffPost. Yes, a blogger! Reading through the comments on our site, we realized that our readers are an underutilized resource – smart and opinionated. Our decisions will be based on how many fans a commenter has, how often their comment is selected as a favorite and our moderators’ favorites. Every comment has an I’m A Fan Of and a Favorite link so start voting for the comments and commenters you like best. We will announce the first one at the end of this month!

Thanks community guy for pointing it out. These are the kind of things we worry about as well. In fact we are working on a widget that will reward the best commenters by highlighting their contributions. This will be based on community ratings rather than an editor at a site (who has the time anyhow??)
