Disqus raises a round

March 18th, 2008

Congratulations to Disqus for raising the round…

They have been showing the following traffic graph to as part of their announcement:

This graph really pisses me off on so many levels…First up, SezWho is not a comment replacement system or a destination site so a graph comparing traffic stats makes no sense at all…Instead we provide a context, rating and reputation service that leaves the content and traffic at the site where it belongs.

For Disqus to be showing this graph demonstrates a complete lack of humility and understanding of community dynamics. They are showing that they are doing a great job of driving traffic away from the sites where are are supposed to he helping build community…I am not sure it really is something a service that provides community building tools should be showing.

SezWho does not drive page views away from the site every time there is a profile view or take away page rank/SEO juice away from a site. And we think that is better for the communities.

Instead a better comparison would be number of commenter using their system…I can say based of their disclosed numbers we have over 5x the number of users and a huge many more comments and page views (if we add profile views etc. like Disqus does)…

Next time onwards they should stay away from these gimmicks and focus instead on building features like track-back support, widget support etc. that make conversations better.

    Jitendra,

    1) The majority of our page views, like most distributed applications, come from blogs. A page view makes a request to our server, not at all unlike SezWho. What’s inaccurate about the metrics?

    2) You are misrepresenting how Disqus works. Disqus doesn’t try to redirect visitors from a blog. Feel free to give it a whirl sometime. I think we are doing an excellent job at building communities.

    3) Congratulations on doing well and good luck moving forward. I think SezWho is a fine product. I just think Disqus is better, but I’m biased. ;)

I’m happy to openly discuss this.

    Daniel,

you are missing the point here…

    >>> The majority of our page views, like most distributed applications, come from blogs. A page view makes a request to our server, not at all unlike SezWho. What’s inaccurate about the metrics?

When a comment is displayed or when a profile for a user is displayed, SezWho does not count that as a new page view…Instead we try and show SezWho additions/profiles withing the context of the site…This really helps users keep the context of the conversation. We are really not interested in padding our page views from the sites we are on…

We are instead more focussed on enabling better conversations within the context of the sites we are in….

    @Jitendra,

Sorry for the delayed response (why wasn’t I notified? ;)

You may have had a point when Disqus was first in the wild, but this is no longer the case. We’re pretty good about listening to what bloggers want and made updates based on that.

If you’re in SF, we should chat sometime.

Daniel, I am sure you are very good about listening to your users…But I was talking about a specific point…Its ok if you don’t want to address that..

We are based on Los Altos…Let’s connect if you are ever in the peninsula and I’ll let you know if I am ever in the city.

I believe I did. I said it didn’t hold true. Try it out for yourself.

This is getting tiring without really getting anywhere. Let me just quote your answer:

    >1) The majority of our page views, like most distributed applications, come from blogs. A page view makes a request to our server, not at all unlike SezWho. What’s inaccurate about the metrics?

What is inaccurate is that SezWho does profile views within the context of the site. These profile views are not counted as SezWho page views (unlike Disqus profile views/Comment page views)…

Most of our page views don’t come from the blogs we are on but rather organically…if we were to count all our interactions with the sites we are on - like disqus does - the graph would be entirely different…

Hope this clarifies things for you.

Tiring? Come on! I enjoy commenting on blogs.

The graph was just for fun. Feel free to show off any fun graphs of your own.

BTW - Disqus displays profiles on the blog as well. It’s new! Try it out!

    :)
